Guess The Capital
This page explains, in plain language, what Guess The Capital keeps on your device, which third parties are involved in showing you the page and its adverts, and how to control it. There's no account and no sign-up, and the game itself never sends anything you type to a server.
What the game stores on your device
The game saves your progress on today's puzzle so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off. It uses your browser's localStorage — not a cookie — under a single key, and holds only:
- Which puzzle number today's game is
- The capitals you've guessed so far
Practice mode rounds are never saved — closing or refreshing simply starts a new random round. Your guesses are never uploaded anywhere.
Advertising and cookies
Guess The Capital is free to play and is funded by adverts. The adverts are served by Google AdSense. To do this, Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar identifiers, which can include:
- Cookies that let Google show adverts based on your earlier visits to this site and to other sites
- Cookies that limit how often you see the same advert and measure whether an advert was shown
These cookies are set by Google, not by the game, and the game never reads them. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its adverts at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
You can turn off personalised advertising from Google at google.com/settings/ads. To opt out of personalised adverts from other advertising networks, visit aboutads.info/choices or, in the UK and EU, youronlinechoices.com.
Your consent (UK and EU visitors)
If you visit from the UK, the EU or Switzerland, you'll see a consent banner the first time you open the game. It asks whether Google and its partners may use cookies for personalised adverts. If you decline, you'll still see adverts, but they won't be based on your browsing history. You can change your choice at any time using the "Privacy and cookie settings" link at the bottom of the game.
Your choices (US visitors)
If you visit from a US state with its own privacy law, such as California, you'll see a notice offering to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for advertising. Choosing to opt out means Google will show you non-personalised adverts instead. Guess The Capital itself doesn't sell or share any data — the option applies only to the advertising described above. You can change your choice at any time using the "Privacy and cookie settings" link at the bottom of the game.
What we don't do
- No accounts, logins, or sign-ups
- No analytics or tracking scripts beyond what the advertising described above needs
- We never collect, store, sell, or share personal data ourselves
Everything the game needs to play — the list of capitals, the day's puzzle, your guesses — lives in the page itself or in your browser.
Other third-party requests
Loading the page makes a few standard web requests to other services, the same as loading an image from another website. Each of these can see your IP address and the page you requested, as any web server does, but the game adds no tracking on top:
- Google Fonts — the typefaces (Fraunces, Inter, IBM Plex Mono)
- jsDelivr — the globe library that draws the 3D map, plus the Natural Earth country outlines it displays
- Google AdSense — the adverts, as described above
Clearing your data
Use "Reset today's puzzle" at the bottom of the game to clear your saved progress at any time. You can also clear it, along with any advertising cookies, through your browser's site settings (sometimes called "site data" or "cookies and site data") for this site.
Contact and changes
Questions about privacy can be sent through the contact page. If what the game stores or who it shares data with ever changes, this page will be updated to match, with a new date at the top.
